West African Baskets

All of these baskets are handwoven by teams that are a part of a large cooperative of people that undergo useful skills training. Working with this cooperative, all sales from the baskets support paying for their health insurance, as well as school tuition for children of the weavers.

Telling the story

Each strand of Elephant Grass is hand-rolled, twisted and dyed before being handwoven into a particular shape and pattern.

They are made from elephant grass which is so strong it is also used for reinforcing walls, roofing and preventing erosion. It is a fast growing plant that needs to be cut and harvested several times a year - the baskets are made from the excess.

It is water resistant, being that it's naturally hydrophobic and does well in damp environments like bathrooms.
